What to Do If You Think Your Dog Has Eaten Something Toxic

Let’s cut to the chase. If you suspect that your dog has accidentally (or purposely) ingested a toxic substance, here’s what you can do:

  • Call your vet or an emergency animal clinic immediately—time is critical.
  • Contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) — charges may apply for consultation.
  • Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinarian — it can make things worse.
  • Try to identify what your dog ingested (packaging, plant, medication) and how much.
  • Keep household toxins out of reach — including chocolate, grapes, onions, ibuprofen, antifreeze and sugar-free foods containing xylitol.
  • If you walk in a well-populated areas (like West Hollywood) always be aware of trash and other items that your dog may find attractive while nosing around sidewalks, trashcans, bushes and dumpsters.

It happens—one day, your perfect pup might decide to eat something absolutely vile. You’re walking along with your dog who dives into a bush or the gutter and snaps up some mystery goo and you don’t know what it is, but your dog thinks it’s yummy.

Or maybe, someone got into the holiday bowl of chocolates in the middle of the night, while the humans were sleeping? Did you misplace that AirTag or does the dog always look that guilty?? (Always keep small items with rechargeable batteries out of reach of naughty dogs, and if you use a tracker on your dog, make sure it is safely fastened to the dog’s collar with a dedicated holder, btw).

If you’re unsure but suspect your dog has eaten something they shouldn’t, watch for any immediate symptoms like foaming at the mouth, unusual or sudden lethargy, being unable to stand, trouble breathing or excessive vomiting or dry heaving and other sudden changes in condition or behavior. If your pet displays any of these symptoms, take them immediately to the vet or veterinary ER.

Obstructions, like a TV remote or shoe, can also be harmful when eaten, but your dog might not understand this no matter how many times you tell them, “NO.” If you suspect your dog has woofed down something they shouldn’t, it’s best to call your vet ASAP for further advice.
